Auburn, Ala. - The City of Auburn Parks and Recreation Department received a grant of $2,440 from the Alabama State Council on the Arts (ASCA), the state arts agency for the Adventures in Art program.
Adventures in Art is a community-based art education program held annually each fall at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center. This program involves all fourth and fifth grade students from Auburn City Schools. The program is sponsored by the City of Auburn Parks and Recreation Department and in 2009 was partially funded by grants from the Junior League of Lee County and ASCA. The intent of the program is to demonstrate to students the importance of the arts in education.
ASCA grants are awarded through a multi-faceted competitive review process. According to the agency, this grant signifies the City of Auburn Parks and Recreation Department provides programs of artistic quality, serves the needs of the community and demonstrates high-level administrative standards, as well as enhancing education of students at all levels.
This grant awarded by ASCA is made possible through funding from an annual appropriation from the Alabama State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts. This public support enables the City of Auburn Parks and Recreation Department to demonstrate the importance of arts education in the state of Alabama, to foster community development, to present artistic opportunities in a context where educational excellence is achieved and to utilize the educational and cultural resources encompassing the state of Alabama.
