Lebo Finished as Auburn Men’s Basketball Head Coach

Auburn Head Coach Jeff Lebo has been dismissed from the men’s basketball team. The announcement came Friday from Auburn Athletics Director Jay Jacobs.

"I want to thank Coach Lebo for all that he has done for Auburn University over the past six years," Jacobs said. "Coach Lebo has worked hard and has always represented Auburn with character, class and integrity. However, we feel like the time has come for Auburn basketball to move in a new direction. We deeply appreciate all that he and his staff have done for Auburn, and we wish each of them and their families nothing but the best."

Lebo was named the Head Coach at Auburn on April 8, 2004. Since then the team has been fairly pedestrian on the court with an overall record of 96-93 and a conference record of 35-61. He has had just two winning seasons during his six year tenure and only one in the SEC.

While Lebo has been hailed as a traditional X’s and O’s kind of coach, his lackluster recruiting to build quality frontcourt depth ultimately led to his undoing. Auburn routinely suffered in rebounding, scoring in the paint and interior defense which heavily contributed to a losing conference record. Lebo often preached that progress was being made yet the university clearly felt differently and will look for someone new to revive this stagnant program to coincide with the heavily anticipated opening of the new arena.

It is not yet clear which candidates will be in the running for the newly vacant position.
