Auburn University Club Hockey Team

When most people think of collegiate sports played in Alabama, ice hockey may not be at the top of their list. A group of Auburn students has been working over the past year to create a club hockey team that is associated with the University. Auburn is the last university in the SEC to have an official club hockey team. The University had an ice hockey team back in the 1980's, but safety and insurance concerns prevented the team from surviving. Students like Josh Holderness wanted to continue with their hockey career after high school, but they were disappointed to learn that Auburn lacked a team. However, with their hard work, the team has become a reality.

The SGA approved the Auburn University Hockey Team as a provisional organization in the Spring, and Auburn students were one step closer to taking the ice once again. The team will play in the Southeastern Collegiate Hockey Conference against teams like Georgia, Alabama, LSU, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, and Georgia Tech. The team will play most of their games on the road, and their home ice will alternate between the Columbus Civic Center and the Pelham Civic Center. The Tigers will face off on the ice against the Crimson Tide at the first Iron Cup held at the Pelham Civic Center in January.
