Divers Make a Splash at Auburn

Auburn divers have a fierce devotion to a sport that not many people have the talent for. Diving requires a large amount of effort, time, and especially talent- just ask Kelly Marx or Thad Ellis, two students at Auburn University.
These two young men spend their college lives being attentive to their goals. Long days and early practices are all devoted to the desire for championships and titles. Moreover, the hard work shows, especially with the numerous titles and honors they have received as a result of their diving career.
Aside from the glory of the titles, the divers have even more to look forward to-the Olympic Games. Marx and Ellis both have high hopes for their futures, but do not want to think further in advance than necessary at this point. “2012 is still a long way off, but I’d love to represent the U.S.,” said senior, Kelly Marx.
However, achieving these lofty goals will be no easy task. First, the team is working on the basics. “We’re trying to work on the easier stuff so we can be more prepared for the harder stuff,” said freshman Thad Ellis.
Furthermore, Kelly and Thad are working on perfecting the art of the synchronized dive. With much success on this dive already, they are continuing to make adjustments with the help of their head coach, Jeff Shaffer. The two make a good team on the so-called “synchro” dive partially due to their height. Kelly and Thad are both about six feet tall, which is quite tall for a diver, compared to the average height of around five feet, four inches. The dive is sure to be a splashing success.
At Auburn, the dive season will begin October 23. The season is set to include eight dual meets and wrap up with the NCAA championships of 2010. Be sure to come out and support your Auburn Divers!
